They arrived at Gordo and Erica's house at nine the next morning. Erica answered the door shortly after Grace rang the bell.

She was dressed smartly; a black button-up blouse, slim-fitting slacks and patent leather boots that matched her belt. She shrugged on a jacket as they stepped into the entryway, and called out, “Gordo! You have visitors!”

Then she reached for her purse. “I wish I could stay and chat, but I’m just heading out to meet Steve at his office.”

“On a Sunday?” Tenley said with surprise.

Erica nodded. “Closing day’s coming up on our new house, and there are millions of details to iron out. I’ve been working overtime at the restaurant, and this is the only time we could find to meet up. Steve’s as eager to finish the negotiations as I am. He’s been working tirelessly with the agent Marisa hired. We’re getting so close!”

Gordo appeared and she gave him a quick goodbye peck on the cheek and then ducked out the door.

“Ladies! Good morning,” Gordo said. “Come in, have a cup of coffee with me.”

Grace enjoyed the warmth of the house, and she had to admit, Gordo’s welcoming attitude was comforting, too. I must not be fooled! she reminded herself.

She followed Gordo and Tenley farther into the house, and the scent of freshly brewed coffee wafted around her.

Mercury and Lucky jaunted off to play with Sheeva. Gordo ushered Grace and Tenley onto the curving benches of a breakfast nook that was built into the wall.

As he poured out cups of coffee he said, “Did you hear from Morgan Riley about the dog tag? I’m just dying to know what he said.”

He set steaming mugs down before them. “I can tell you’re just as troubled by Sloan’s death as I am. It’s gotten under my skin, I admit, and I feel you’ve been bit by the same bug.”

Something like that, Grace thought. She reached for her cup and took a sip. It bothered her that Gordo’s friendly and welcoming manner had exerted such an influence over her.

He spoke now as though they were united in a cause—finding Sloan’s killer—and Grace felt herself almost unconsciously falling into the same trap that had snagged her in the days before.

But we’re not on the same team, she thought as she sipped the piping hot brew. The flavors were rich and nutty on her tongue; the blend tasted gourmet, and probably freshly ground. I can’t be swayed by his tasty coffee and warm hospitality, she thought.

If we were truly united in finding out what happened to Sloan, Gordo would have been honest with us. Instead, he didn’t mention the fact that he had a terrible argument with Sloan on the night she died.

Tenley shifted in her seat anxiously. “I'll speak for myself and confess that I’m absolutely troubled by the whole thing,” she said. “It’s awful to think that foul play was involved, yet the police are not doing a thing about it.”

“Like I said, they’re taking the easy way out.” Gordo pursed his lips and shook his head.
